“Lovers/Hope” by George Frederic Watts

The painting by George Frederic Watts shows a female allegorical figure of Hope. Hope is traditionally identifiable through the attribute of an anchor, but Watts took a more original approach. In his painting, she is depicted sitting on a globe, blindfolded, clutching a wooden lyre with only one string left intact. She sits in a hunched position, with her head leaning towards the instrument, perhaps so she can hear the faint music she can make with the sole remaining string. According to Watts, “Hope need not mean expectancy. It suggests here rather the music which can come from the remaining chord”. The desolate atmosphere is emphasised by Watts’s soft brushwork, creating a misty, ethereal scene, in tones of green, brown and grey.

the only thing on my mind right now, is that i dont understand how some people be so cruel at times. its like they just live to destroy someone. whether intentional or not. its disgusting. humanity sure has its ways of disappointing me.

telling myself its just a few more weeks, just a few more months, and i'll be done with it.
although soon enough it'll start all over again, but at least there is something to look forward to, and time to fix the little patches and tie up the loose ends in my mind.

now it feel very much like the ship is sinking, and people just keep throwing rocks at it. or maybe i keep sailing into rocks, im not exactly sure. anyhow everyone's tired. which makes it worse. because angry people do nothing but throw rocks to rid their frustration. its a damned vicious cycle.

on days like these, i wish i have a fairy godmother to make everything alright.

the old lady that cleans my level in hall isnt here for work today, i wonder how she is. im not sure if she's coming back because they got someone else to replace her. its sad cause i miss her.

it felt weird because im so used to her presence every morning, and the little conversations we try to make when she walks past my door and look at what im doing on my computer screen. and she's always amused and want to tell me something although she cant speak, so she'll gesture for goodness knows how long till I understand her.

i somehow hope wherever she is, she is happy.

one of my favourite feelings in the world right now is to stand completely still in the veranda outside my room, and to watch the campus sleep and feel its slow steady heartbeat.

its nice to be in darkness yet be unafraid. i rarely feel that way because im terrified of the dark. i don't sleep alone in the dark unless i fall asleep before the lights are turned off. but on good days you just feel warmth. and that warmth gives you the courage to be unafraid.

chinese new year visiting also makes me feel so absolutely sapped out that i can barely do anything when i get home.

seeing my cousins all grown up and the look of comfort on my grandparents' faces when they see me after such a long time, really warmed my heart. days like these make me wish that my heart was a little more settled and i could ease myself into this familiarity. I wish I can feel the wholeness of a family without that slight tinge of skepticism or envy; that it is something another can construct but not me.

today as i watched my cousins blew out the candles, and my aged grandparents watched on, it was such a bittersweet moment, so beautiful that i want to freeze it and place it in my memory forever.

Benjamin was born in Paris in 1982.
In 2001, he attended the ƒcole Nationale SupŽrieure des Arts DŽcoratifs of Paris (ENSAD) where he pursued his artistic education. In addition to his studies, he worked as an advertising and animated movie artist before completing his first comic series at the age of 19, along with a few other illustrated books.

His final project "Cherry and Olive", which he has both written and illustrated, became his first children’s book and was published by Les ƒditions du Seuil in March 2006. The following year, it was released by Walker Books (USA) and nominated one of the top 10 children’s books for the year 2007 in the U.S.A. by the prestigious weekly news magazine Time.

Since then, Benjamin has written and illustrated numerous books. He has notably worked with Albin Michel, Barefoot Books (USA), Edelvives (Spain), Hemingway Korea (Korea), Milan, MaxMilo, Sarbacane, Soleil, Walker Books (USA) and of course Le Seuil Jeunesse, the publishing house which has issued most of his books.

Benjamin exhibits his work on a regular basis. Among others, it has been displayed in the following art galleries: Ad Hoc Art (New York),L’art de rien (Paris), Dorothy Circus (Rome), Maruzen (Tokyo), etc...

so anyhow, i shouldnt compare cause im not a photo-person. but aren't these breathtaking?

they are so dreamy and other-worldy. they kind of remind me of james jean's watercolour washes. but the whole idea that these were taken underwater, and are moments captured just make them all the more beautiful and captivating.

ive been meaning to share this for quite some time already, since a lovely friend of mine showed it to me.
dr. seuss writes such amazing and inspiring things, and Oh, the Places You'll Go at Burning Man! happens to be one of my favourite poems! I remembered reading his books when i was little and always wanting to fill the white spaces in because i thought they were intentionally left empty for me to fill in.

and so, this video makes me fall in love with its magic all over again.

i finally started painting today at oli and jing beautiful kindergarten.
how wonderful that place is, and in just one day it'll be filled with little feet running on its grounds. how lovely.

was spent painting three huge clouds, shopping for the new semester...
and finallllyyy getting down to organize my horribly neglected wardrobe!

so now instead of looking like it was swept by a massive tornado, my clothes are now neat and colour coded. lets see how long will this last.

so now i have a neat wardrobe and a neat library. tomorrow i will have a neat table too.

the craziest, most life-changing year has passed for me. so long, 2011. i will remember you forever for all your crazy shit that turned my head upside down and held it there till my vessels clogged and i almost suffered a stroke.

i dont really understand the huge deal about new years because a new year is afterall a time filled with 365 new days. its funny, isn't it, that some people choose to anticipate the new year when each day they live is new. but if its an excuse to party and have fun stupid awesome fun, then that's definitely worth the wait.

so anyhow, since new years for me are for mini thank you speeches and packing my sty, i must admit i have a severely underdeveloped social night life. resolutions, dreams and wishlists are little secrets written in a book stashed in a little corner of my heart. if not they will not come true. hope you had a fun new year. and have a great first day of 2012 soon :)

i want to live in a place that snows, so i can wear knitted scarves and hats with rainbow pom-poms, and stockings of different colours without feeling warm. i also want a pet reindeer and a horse in my lawn, so they can keep each other company when i am busy painting or making things. and on good days when the land is warmer i will bring them both to the orchard to pick apples and pears, and have raspberries with cereal for breakfast.

anyhow i watch Malick's Tree Of Life in the morning and ever since the day seems to be passing really slowly. you need to watch the movie to understand what i mean, because its so zen-like, with all its lush visuals, you just get lost and never quite get your pace back.

i think im starting to lose my head because i woke up super early in the morning and insisted that i had to go to school. only at the carpark i realized that there is nothing in stall for me at The Islands, and that im just being overly paranoid, as usual.

It is such a strange thing, that what happened had happened, and people think and act differently as time passes. There are things and ghosts about the past that seep through your fingers faster the tighter you try to grasp them in your fist. and maybe all that, is part of nature, and forgetting things, that is also part of change.

i have been so afraid to speak, even on good days when words miraculously came out right, but they never went beyond the red and blue pages. the slightest attempts to break out have proved that i have lost my tongue; probably tangled up within the ball of mess resulted from the discord in my mind. why, i have questioned myself many times. i used to be content, by the smell of the coming rain, a quiet bus ride, an hour of good company. now i am displeased with my work, hardly found peace in solitude, and can barely look at myself proper in the mirror. funny ways how a year can do to you, not sure if for better or for worse.

do you believe in destiny? do you believe that things are all planned for us? how clever and charming, isn't it, if they were all planned and written like a storybook. its like when you see a stranger on a lift, or a dead bird on the street, and wonder how different life is if you were them instead of you. if you were born with a tail instead of feet, or born in a land that is barren and burnt.

the mysteries of ordinariness is so captivating and beautiful, arent they? its hard to see all that, with all those movies that make suffering so beautiful, triumph so sweet, love so unconditional. they make ordinary seem so dull, so listless.

back from japan for almost half a day already but ive been delaying my post because i havent got my macbook back yet. so i apologise for the rather poor photos taken with my lemecam, because i have yet to start editting the pictures from the trip! :(

im still suffering from withdrawal symptoms; i really miss the snow, and the lack of crowds, the cold weather. oh, and polite people. i missed polite people once i touchdown-ed at the airport.

i bought back a horde of rubbish. actually not a horde, because things in japan can get painfully expensive. but its really fun because everything from japan is so quirky and beautifully packaged. it really disgusted people when i started collecting rubbish midway through the trip, so i just did it discreetly after.

a close up of the daruma doll (isnt it adorable? heehee). yeah ive been finding it the whole trip and only managed to get my hands on one at the airport an hour before flying back home. it took awhile for me to realise that daiso probably sells them too.

my little bag of receipts/tickets/rubbish that i collected the past 7 days. dont that particular wrapper label in the middle look strikingly like the poster i did for class? ;D

fed my little obsession with the great wave. i even got myself some towels with ukiyo-e prints on them, its so awesome! my parents can hardly understand my obssession with them but its okay so long as they paid for them.

i really want to upload little stories of the trip right now :( but this computer is just very editting-unfriendly. please be patient! hopefully the photos will be up soon!

its horrible because it has been sent for service for more than a week and its not ready (so much for 2-3 working days). for all those who understand my computer-attached soul will probably understand how frustrated and empty im feeling right now.

im using this desktop that hangs so much its making me go absolutely insane. and ive been miss calling eserve and epicenter so many times i think my soul is starting to rot.

havent been doing much the whole day except reading a few pages of a book (and a bloody wasted trip to the epicenter in the afternoon) ohgod, i miss japan already.

christmas is around the corner, my absolute favourite time of the year! although right here it doesnt look much different other than the huge wastage of electricity along the streets of Orchard; ive always believe christmas is within the heart. a nice time to huddle up in knitwear with a nice cup of hot cocoa and a good movie.

remember this? yeah, im designing for SPCA again! i did this 2 years ago, and oh gosh, how time flies.
this was before i learnt how to use the pentool, which is kind of embarrassing but you got to admit its kinda cute in an ugly way. so yeah, the upcoming designs have definitely matured. wait for it!

this 30 days are absolutely brimmed with projects, from school projects, working at Evil, to painting murals in kindergartens (which i really hope i can find time to do!), things to knit and sew, and a long, long to-paint list. if all works out, there will be very exciting posts coming ahead!

ahh... and upcoming christmas is making me tingly and happy all over.
i absolutely love this time of the year.

today marks the very end of year 2 sem 1, which is awesome because ive been looking forward to this day for too long already!

ive spent the night doing basically nothing except arrange my files on my computer like my OCD ( which only applies to computer folders) seriously acted up. i wanted to watch a movie or two, but wow. how time passes.

it is all very exciting because im leaving for japan in a few days! i hope i dont freeze to death because i never have enough layers of bottoms to cover up all the time. im a really bad packer because i have a tendency of staring at the suitcase and getting very distracted - i will end up spending most of the time sewing bags to put my little bottle of toiletries and nonsense as such.

but toodles, im going to get some wonderful sleep now. and maybe tomorrow i'll be back with something more.

yeah, i know im supposed to be studying right now instead of doing nonsense as such, but today IS a sunday afterall, and i am feeling so terribly restless, my mind is finding it so difficult to concentrate.

the changes made:
archives are not stored at the bottom of the blog column and ive finally created older/newer posts arrows. it still isnt fantastic because you still have to click the blog button after that, but it does make it a alot more convenient now!
